100 years ago, 1912
For the past two days hundreds of people have called at the grocery and market of Otto H, Olfene at Court Street, Auburn, especially to look over the new iceless refrigeration plant just installed. Mr. Olfene’s is the largest iceless refrigeration plant this side of Portland, and one of the largest this side of Boston. Installing it has completely renovated the appearance of his store, introducing show cases and fixtures which are the first in Auburn and Lewiston.

50 years ago, 1962
“We now have the best civilian airport in the State of Maine.” Those were the words of Auburn City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett at the beginning of this year as he summarized new construction and maintenance projects at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport.
Two major projects completed at the airport last fall included the installation of “clear zone” or obstruction marking lights on all hills and other high obstructions, and lengthening the main runway from 4,500 to 5,000 feet.

25 years ago, 1987
(Editorial) The turnout of more than 400 people at a Lewiston City Council meeting last week was an impressive demonstration that the Franco-American community is still very much rankled by the discontinuation three months ago of a French-Canadian station on cable television. But their presence in City Hall was more than just a show of irritation at the loss of a few television programs. It was a clear signal that the French language, despite its gradual decline in the Twin Cities, remains a vital force here and must be respected.
