NORWAY — Fire departments from 10 towns responded Sunday night to a fire on Dunn Road.

The back half of the farmhouse and an ell connected to a barn were gutted, according to Norway Fire Chief Dennis Yates, but firefighters were able to save the front of the home and an attached barn.

The fire, which was reported at 7:26 p.m., was in a rural area and presented firefighters with difficulties in getting water to the scene, Yates said.

“Being so far out, the first thing I did was I started calling in water tankers from other departments,” Yates said late Sunday night.

Yates said the homeowner, Leslie Miller, was out of town on work Sunday night, but her housemate, Tina Farrar, was there with her 16-year-old daughter, Miller’s 14-year-old son and a 20-year-old friend who was staying at the home. None of the occupants were injured. The two families also had several pets, all of which were saved expect for one cat.

Yates said the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office will be on scene Monday morning to investigate the blaze, which caused more than $30,000 worth of damage to the home. He did not have an exact cause of the fire, but believes a wood stove might have played a role.

“They did a really good job of saving the home,” Yates said of the nearly 50 firefighters who answered the call to help.

Yates said that two firefighters — one from Oxford and one from Norway — were taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Firefighters cleared the scene about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
