FARMINGTON — Alpheus “Al” Knowlton, 86, a resident of Depot Street, Livermore Falls, died Sunday, Feb. 26, at Franklin Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born April 29, 1925, in Lewiston, the son of Everett and Leola (Burnham) Knowlton. He attended school in Leeds.

On Feb. 14, 1943, he married Louise Pomeroy. They were married for 66 years. She passed away May 27, 2009. He served in U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He marched into Paris during the liberation of France.

Al worked for IP at the Otis and Androscoggin Mills in Jay, where he was a crane operator in the wood yard, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the IP Quarter Century Club, Livermore Falls Senior Citizens and a life member of the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 in Jay.

Al enjoyed going to auctions when he and Louise were running their antique shop “Dutch Barn Antiques”’ on Route 133 in East Livermore. He loved to play cards, especially cribbage; he could be found playing cribbage at the VFW every Sunday night, or at the Local Union Hall in Jay.

Al also loved dogs and cats having many dogs throughout his lifetime. When his grandchildren were younger, he kept ponies for them, and enjoyed his time with them very much.

He is survived by his son, Wayne Knowlton and his wife, Patricia, of Livermore Falls; his daughter, Carla Lathe and her husband, David, of Farmingdale; five grandchildren, Rick Knowlton and his wife, Debbie, of Bath, Kelly Barry and her husband, David, of Portland, Kurt Knowlton and his companion, Laurie Therrien, of Auburn, Kimberly Lucas and her husband, David, of Mt. Vernon and Andrew Lathe and his wife, Loretta, of Augusta; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife.
