LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women announces a shift in programming. Beginning in March, rather than individual distinct classes each afternoon, several options will be provided. On Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. various activities and games will be made available. On Thursday afternoons at the same time relaxation activities will be offered.
Support groups will meet on Tuesday afternoon with the ongoing and popular “Wisdom Circle” with Sarah Wood, and a new group called “Beating the Blues” meeting on alternate weeks. The Beating the Blues group will use a book, “How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me: One Person’s Guide to Suicide Prevention” by Susan Rose Baluner.
Morning programs will continue as before and are held from 10to 11:30. A “Tea, Talk and Travel” program about China will be given by two Bates students on March 13. The monthly Wise Woman Cooking Club will meet on March 20 at 10 a.m. with Denise Dill from the Nutrition Center.
On March 12 the center will celebrate the return of daylight savings time, and on March 16 will host a St. Patrick’s Day baked potato bar brunch.
Craft classes this month include a handloom project on March 7 and a traveling altar project on March 21 as well as scrapbooking and painting classes. The monthly Bingo is set for March 27.
The Dempsey Center will visit on March 1 with a focus on colon cancer awareness, and March 29 for conversation about general cancer information and services.
On March 6 Western Maine Community Action will offer a “Busting the Barriers” program about breast health, which will include coupons for free screening services. Student nurses are on site each Thursday morning for weekly health and wellness checks. They will host a class on March 8 about basic health maintenance and on March 15 a class on good food choices for those with diabetes. An intern from Tri County Mental Health is available for conversations on Wednesday mornings.
A weekly Al-Anon group for women meets on Wednesdays at 12:15. For those who struggle with a loved one’s addiction, Lise Pellitier will lead a discussion about co-dependency on March 29 at 10 a.m. Other regular programs include the writers workshop on Monday mornings, a poetry lunch on Tuesdays, a story and art lunch on Thursdays.
An oatmeal breakfast and personal hygiene items are available upon request at no charge. The center opens at 9 a.m. each weekday, and closes at 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, at noon on Wednesday and Friday. All women are welcome and programs are offered free of charge.
