100 years ago, 1912
L.W. Ballard, our veteran musical conductor, presented the first concert of the new Twin City Symphony at the Main Street Free Baptist Church Wednesday evening, and it was indeed the star musical event of the season. The concert was a present delight and full of promise for the future. The orchestra is very well balanced, considering the material available, and plays with a smoothness remarkable for an orchestra of only three months practice together. The first violin section was particularly complete and satisfying and the cornets and horns, the few in number, held their own and did some excellent work.
50 years ago, 1962
Despite generally poor voting weather, Lewiston voters poured to the polls yesterday to give a resounding victory to 53-year-old Lewiston grocer Donia J. Girard, and he’ll become the Textile City’s new mayor at the March 19 inauguration. Girard defeated Dr. Norman O. Gauvreau by a total of 7,794 to 6,067, for a winning margin of 1,727 votes.
25 years ago, 1987
St. Dominic Regional High School officials Wednesday announced plans to join a new athletic league forming in southern Maine and add two sports next year. All 11 St. Doms interscholastic teams except hockey, a member of the Maine Interscholastic Hockey League, are to play in the yet-to-be-named conference. The new sports, girls soccer and cross country for both boys and girls, are to compete in the conference.
