MONMOUTH — Monmouth Community Players will present “Moonlight and Magnolias,” Ron Hutchinson’s play relating the true story behind the writing of the screenplay for “Gone with the Wind.”

The show, directed by Linda Duarte, will run March 23 to April 1 at Cumston Hall.

Three weeks into shooting his latest historical epic, “Gone with the Wind,” producer David O. Selznick (played by David Marshall) decides the script isn’t right. So he gets hold of Hollywood’s best screenwriter, Ben Hecht (Frank Omar), and pulls director Victor Fleming (Raymond Fletcher) from the set of “The Wizard of Oz” —  and the fun begins.

Hecht hasn’t read the book, so Selznick locks them all in a room with lots of “brain food,” supplied by his secretary, Miss Poppenghul (Jacquelyn Mansfield). There, he and Fleming act out the story so Hecht “gets the picture.”

Loads of enthusiasm and some slapstick comedy ensue as the characters living in the Golden Age of Hollywood express their dreams and beliefs.

Performances will be at 7:30 March 23, 24, 30, and 31; and 2 p.m. March 25 and April 1 at Cumston Hall, 796 Main St. For tickets, $12/10, call 514-4929 or visit monmouthcommunityplayers.com.

Please note: there is some adult language, and real peanuts will be used on-stage.
