DEAR SUN SPOTS: What does the “W” in the Portland International Jetport airport code PWM signify? Thanks for your excellent service! — No Name, Lewiston
ANSWER: Sun Spots found the following explanation at portlandjetport.org:
“PWM, the code given to the Jetport by the FAA, stands for Portland Westbrook Municipal. In the earliest days of aviation, pilots would navigate using a series of lights. The last set of lights before the runway in Portland was located in Westbrook.”
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I read the article about the Lewiston drum group (Feb. 19), and I was wondering if there was someone I could contact about attending the next session? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. — Michael Poliquin, [email protected]
ANSWER: Freelancer writer Dan Marois referred Sun Spots to www.wisdomswomen.org, where there is an email contact form. The website also provided an address and phone number: Executive Director Klara Tamany, Center for Wisdom’s Women, P.O. Box 1016, Lewiston, ME 04243, 513-3922.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for the pocket-size calendars (Feb. 7 request). You have certainly made my day. — B.P., Bethel
ANSWER: B.P. has Mr. Shortill of Shortill Office Supply to thank. He made a special trip over to the Sun Journal and left them in the newsroom so Sun Spots could mail them to you. B.P. can also thank the Maine Family Federal Credit Union and Community Credit Union for supplying them to customers.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Recently someone reported my phone number was not the right one for invisible weaving (Feb. 24, 25). I can assure you my phone number, 784-7062, is in good working condition and is the correct number. I do invisible weaving. — Lorraine Ligthart, Lewiston
ANSWER: Hmmm, how odd. Perhaps the person who reported that the number was incorrect misdialed or misread the number? Sun Spots is glad you wrote to straighten it out, as you are the only invisible weaver she has come across.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am writing to correct my letter of March 2. I do not want to strip electrical wires in my house, rather I would like to get discarded wires to strip instead of their being thrown away. We need funds to take our 14-year-old granddaughter to Boston for weekly medical treatments. We stay at the Ronald McDonald House, but need money for gas, parking and food. — Marie, Greene
ANSWER: Sun Spots is very happy you wrote to correct her misinterpretation and that you are not dismantling your home. However, she is not sure she can be of much help.
First of all, she doubts seriously that anyone is throwing away old wiring. It is valuable to electricians as well as to thieves who rip it out of homes and to town transfer stations, which recycle it to offset their operating costs.
Second, no matter how great their need, individual readers cannot write to Sun Spots to ask for things of value. Only recognized nonprofit organizations can do that.
Sun Spots is very sorry for your situation. She has seen tough times too, once selling some of her possessions to raise money (now much easier with eBay). Perhaps readers will have suggestions for fundraising. Have you shared your situation with your church or your granddaughter’s school?
DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the reader looking for information on the Pine Tree Warriors (Feb. 18) and others who might be interested in the history of the snowshoe clubs, the Franco-American Collection at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College has a lot of information on these organizations.
We have photos, membership records and uniforms from the Pine Tree Warriors, Montangard, Passe Temps and Jacques Cartier clubs. The collection is open to the public four days a week, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
