LISBON — Albert Lawrence “Larry” Merrill, 76, died unexpectedly at his home in Lisbon on Saturday, Feb. 4.
He was born in Auburn, March 14, 1935, to Albert E. and Margaret (Juul) Merrill, the second of four children. He grew up on a farm in Auburn and attended Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School, Class of 1953. He graduated from Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland on June 23, 1955, with a degree in technology of automotive mechanics.
He served in the U.S. Navy from April 10, 1957, until his honorable discharge on April 1, 1959. On Sept. 11, 1960, he married Muriel Agnes Jones, who predeceased him on Feb. 24, 2009. Their infant daughter, Donna Sue Merrill, predeceased him on Aug. 14, 1961. He was also predeceased by his parents and stepmother.
After the Navy, he worked at R.I. Mitchell and then for many years with the Auburn Highway Department, retiring in 1997.
Mr. Merrill is survived by his daughter, Deborah (and Raymond) Carlson currently of Lisbon and formerly of Jacksonville, Fla.; his son, Brian Merrill of Gardiner; his grandchildren, Autumn (and Chris) McCahill and Jeremy (and Aisha) Carlson; his great-grandchildren, Jasmine Carlson, Aidan Clayton, Dillon and Logan McCahill, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; his sisters, Dorothy LeClair of Auburn and Mavis (and David) Pomeroy of Detroit; his brother, Leonard (and Carolyn) Merrill of Loudonville, N.Y.; his brother-in-law, Melville Jones Jr., of Auburn; his nieces and nephews, Jeff (and Anne) Pomeroy, Barbara Pomeroy, Albert (and Jane) Merrill (and great-nieces, Leslie Juul and Rebecca Merrill), Ernest Merrill and Emily Merrill (and her husband, Mark Ottensmeyer).
He will be missed by all who knew him.
