BETHEL — SAD 44 officials are seeking bidders to install a new sound system in the Helen C. Berry Auditorium of Telstar Middle/High School.
An anonymous gift of $50,000 in honor of the Cross brothers was given late last year to replace the decades-old system, Superintendent David Murphy said.
Most of the funds will be used for the sound system; however, the donor designated that $5,000 be deposited in the district’s wellness account, and a set of portable risers to be chosen by the elementary music teachers be purchased for use in the district’s elementary schools.
Murphy said he expects about $40,000 to remain for the sound system.
If that entire sum is not needed for the replacement, Murphy said the district also wants the lighting system for the stage upgraded.
The bids packages went out late last week and are due at the superintendent’s office by 2 p.m. March 20. From there, Murphy will take the proposals to the school board on March 27.
He said work has been done on the sound system over the years, but a new system is needed to provide proper sound for the high school’s musicals.
The next one, “Grease,” will be performed in late spring.
Murphy hopes that the new sound system can be installed in time for the performance.
The donor asked for a plaque to be placed in the auditorium honoring Stuart, Norton and Donald Cross, who were critical to the creation of the Mt. Abram Family Ski Resort.
