DIXFIELD — A former principal and teacher at Dirigo High School is the owner of a yellow gown and white dress coat discovered in the town garage during a cleanup.

Deputy Town Treasurer Charlotte Collins put out the word for the owner of the outfit a couple of weeks ago. The two formal pieces of clothing had been on display in the Town Office.

Pat Sheedy Conant, now of Scarborough, is the owner, Collins said via email. The coat with a frog closure was sewn by Conant for her senior prom in 1968. The gown was worn by Conant as a bridesmaid dress for her sister’s wedding in 1979.

The apparel was stored in the town garage several years ago when Conant was teaching at Dirigo High School in Dixfield and her home was nearly destroyed by fire. According to Collins, Conant stored some of the things salvaged from the fire in the town garage.

The dress and coat will be returned to Conant.

The mystery has been solved, Collins said, thanks to efforts by local resident Bradley Frost.
