I am writing to express my concern regarding when and for whom it is appropriate to lower the American flag.
The flag represents all Americans and is the symbol of the nation’s hard-won freedom and integrity. The practice should be reserved for those who have honorably served the country (such as presidents, members of the House and Senate, military personnel, firefighters and law enforcement personnel). It is a way of paying tribute to those who have sacrificed and it shows the world what we value.
There are other ways to pay tribute to those who do not fit that criteria (such as the rich and famous). Most simply do not fall into the same category as a soldier who gave his or her life for the country.
I understand the practice of bestowing the national honor is the discretion of the president and governors, and since some lack the understanding of what that honor means to so many people, I think their discretionary power should be replaced by a law that is specific and strictly limits its use.
