No fewer than three Lewiston High School graduates are making an impact early in the college baseball season, including two teammates at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Massachusetts.

Alex Wong of Lewiston spun a three-hit shutout Friday for Wentworth in an 8-0 shutout of RIT at Avon Park, Fla.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Leopards (7-4) on their spring trip. That streak ended in the nightcap, with Wentworth dropping a 5-4 verdict.

Wong also went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. He also was hit by a pitch and stole second base in the first inning before scoring the eventual winning run. The two-run triple in the second frame was already his fifth of the young campaign.

On the mound, the lefthander faced only three batters over the minimum, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk. Wong has a 1.32 ERA in nearly 14 innings.

The team leader in nearly every offensive category, Wong is 20-for-36 (.556) with 16 runs scored, 11 RBIs and nine stolen bases.

Freshman Scott Ouellette contributed an RBI fielder’s choice to Friday’s shutout victory. Ouellette is batting .238 for Wentworth and has driven home five runs in eight games as an infielder.

Mekae Hyde has started five games in his rookie season at Bates. Hyde, a catcher, is second on the club with three stolen bases, has scored four runs and generated an on-base percentage of .400.

Hyde scored the winning run against Berry College after a monumental comeback that saw the Bobcats score eight runs in the top of the ninth inning before prevailing 13-12 in the 10th. Hyde had a one-out single and a stolen base to set the table in the extra frame.

Bates swept Oglethorpe to conclude its trip to Georgia with five wins in seven starts.

FOUR-OCIOUS RALLY

Another Lewiston product led a big comeback by the University of Southern Maine women’s lacrosse team in its season opener Wednesday.

Southern Maine junior Shelby Turcotte scored four goals for the Huskies in a 15-13 victory over the University of New England.

USM twice trailed by four goals, first 4-0 and later at 7-3 before Turcotte and Jenna Cyr combined for four unanswered tallies to tie the game.

For UNE, sophomore goalkeeper Samantha St. Pierre of Mechanic Falls (Poland Regional High School) made six saves.

St. Pierre was named Commonwealth Coast Conference defensive player of the week for the previous seven-day period, backstopping the Nor’easters to two victories. St. Pierre made 13 saves to turn away Wellesley, including a game-clincher in the final minute of regulation.

UNE topped USM in the men’s contest, 7-5. Junior goalie Kyle Dussault of Lewiston made 17 saves for the Huskies.
