Into the Mud Challenge scheduled for May 5
GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine’s Into the Mud Challenge is back for its’ 2nd year, after a very successful 2011 mud run. The group recently announced it will hold its Second-Annual “Into the Mud Challenge,” a 2.5-mile dash that is sure to be a muddy good time for participants of all ages. Proceeds from the event go to the USM Sport Management Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are designated for undergraduate sport-management students taking part in full-time, unpaid internships that are required for graduation from the program.
The event will take place May 5 at Gorham Middle School. The Into the Mud Challenge is unlike any other event here in Maine. It features slippery pits of mud along with obstacles to overcome, all in the spirit of great fun and friendly competition. Last year, the inaugural Challenge drew in an impressive 375 participants, and the event staff is preparing for an even bigger and muddier event this year.
The Into the Mud Challenge is a unique event with several divisions of competitors. There is an individual division, a youth division, and a team division that allows groups of four to compete alongside friends, relatives and co-workers. The team division also includes a costume competition, which was a huge hit at last year’s event. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each division, along with the team with the best costumes.
Details regarding the Into the Mud Challenge as well as photos and other information from last year’s event can be found on the race website: www.intothemudchallenge.com. In addition, regular race updates are available on Facebook at “Into the Mud Challenge” and @In2MudChallenge on Twitter.
“Participants can expect a challenging 2.5-mile race that will feature mud throughout,” said Race Course Operations Coordinator Matt Berry, “sporting twists and turns with a tire mountain and mud pit thrown into the mix as some of the obstacles.”
Currently, the group is working to connect with sponsorship partners who would like to take advantage of the tremendous exposure for their businesses, including advertising, event signage, website links, vendor opportunities, race T-Shirts, and more.
Portlanders jogging around Back Bay or wandering around the Old Port should be keeping their eyes open for a mud-covered marketing team promoting the Challenge in the coming months. The marketing team isn’t afraid to get dirty to make sure everyone knows what a muddy fun time the 2012 Challenge will prove to be.
Registration is open, and early registration is available until March 17. “Mudders” of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to go online and sign up.
