Reports circulated that Lewiston is being considered for a proposed L.L. Bean telecommunications center. Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor and Scarborough are being considered by the Freeport sporting and camping gear firm for a second high-tech sales office that would provide 100 to 125 full-time telemarketing jobs. An additional 300 to 325 jobs during the Christmas season would be created. Bean’s already has a sizeable operation in Lewiston that includes the manufacture of perhaps its best known product: the Maine Hunting Shoe, better known as Bean boots. The company rents some 300,000 square feet of warehouse space from Bates Fabrics Inc. and another 40,000 to 50,000 square feet for manufacturing.
