RUMFORD/MEXICO — Laidback Installers won the 2012 MV Rec Basketball league championship, fighting off a game Bethel Bobcats team, 79-67.

Bethel was intent on retaining its 2011 crown and was formidable throughout the championship game. LBI used balanced scoring, as they did all year and strong man-to-man defense. They were able to shoot a higher percentage in the second half, which Bethel could not match.

The first half was close as Bethel was only down by one at the break, 36-35. The first eight minutes were tentative, with neither team able to gain an advantage. They traded leads throughout the first half.

At the beginning of the second half, LBI used a couple of fast break opportunities and poor shooting by the opponents to go out to a seven-point lead. From there, they gradually built the lead to double digits and never looked back. The closest Bethel could manage was a seven-point deficit late in the game, but again shooting woes plagued the Bobcats. They were relegated to fouling to stop the clock, but couldn’t convert their opportunities, as LBI built its lead back to double digits.

LBI’s Eric Canwell was a monster at both ends of the floor and on the glass. He finished with a game high 27 points and four 3-pointers, most from NBA range. He was supported by Scot New with 14 points, Brian Canwell 11 and Tyler Chaisson and Owen Jones with 10 each.

Bethel’s Ryan Savage, who was instrumental all year with his floor leadership, continued his improved outside shooting and led his team with 19 points and three 3s. Matt Zetts was next with 13 points and Sean Caddigan had 12.

With the end of this year’s season, teams are now gearing up for the annual MV Rec Invitational Tournament, which takes place March 30 and 31 and April 1. Both of these finalisst will enter a team in the tournament. The Mountain Valley Rec League, in appreciation for the use of the gym at Mountain Valley High School and Middle School, will make a $300 donation to the Mountain Valley Athletic Boosters during the upcoming tournament to support the fundraising cause.
