RANGELEY — If you can bellow like a moose and think you’re pretty good, yeah, there’s a competition for that now.

The Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsmen’s Association is holding a qualifying event for the World Invitational Moose Calling Championship at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Maine Sportsman’s Show in Augusta.

The event is open to all guides and sportsmen who call moose and want to compete for the $1,000 cash prize awarded to the winner of the final event to be held June 23 in Rangeley, Kirby Holcombe, vice president of the RRG&SA, said Friday.

To be eligible to compete in the final, all entrants must qualify at one of the regional qualifying events. The public can watch this contest at the Sportsman’s show.

The World Invitational Moose Calling Championship is part of the Rangeley Moose Lottery Festival, a three-day event from June 22 through 24, held by the RRG&SA in Rangeley. It will include the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Moose Permit Drawing.

Moose calling contestants will be evaluated by a panel of judges based on a maximum 100 points in four categories: Cow Call, Bull Call, Other Attraction Techniques, and Overall Showmanship.

Along with the cash first prize, merchandise packages from sponsors Cabela’s, Extreme Dimension Wildlife Calls and Franklin Savings Bank will be awarded to top finishers at the finals.

The Rangeley Moose Lottery Festival is packed with activities, demonstrations and contests centered on the moose lottery drawing, Holcombe said.

Among the events are a tagged fishing derby; archery, rifle and clay target contests; kayak races; activities for children; an all-terrain vehicle ride; and many more.
