DAMARISCOTTA — Hazel A. Pratt, 89, of Wilton, died Monday, March 19, at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Fredericton, NB, Canada, a daughter of Eddie and Beatrice (Hovey) Lorette. She moved to Maine with her family at an early age, attending local schools and graduating from Wilton Academy.

Hazel worked locally at Forster Manufacturing in Wilton for 12 years and later at G.H. Bass Shoe in Wilton for 10 years. She and her first husband, Richard Austin Sr. then purchased Scribins 5 and 10 store on the Main Street of Wilton and operated it for seven years.

After the death of her husband, Richard, she remarried in 1986 to Moses Pratt in Wilton. He died in 1989.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Wilton Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary. Hazel was an avid reader of Betty Nells’ books and enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables in the fall. Her pickles, pickled beets and fruit jams were family favorites.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Witham and her husband, Wes, of Newcastle; two sons, Richard “Dick” Austin Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Wilton and Paul Austin of Oklahoma; and a brother, Francis Lorette and his wife, Gloria, of Winthrop.

She was predeceased by a sister, Roberta Baker; and a brother, Angus Lorette.
