RUMFORD — State fire investigators continue to investigate the St. Patrick’s Day fire at a vacant house in the Virginia neighborhood.
There were no injuries.
Rumford fire Chief Bob Chase said Tuesday afternoon that the Office of the State Fire Marshal was contacted after the fire at 7 Ernest St. was deemed suspicious. Damage was estimated at $10,000.
“No cause determination has been made at this time,” Chase said. “The area of origin was determined to be near an exterior rear door … and there was a gas can in the area.”
Rumford assessor Linnell Geronda said Tuesday that the single-story building is assessed at $21,000 and had a foreclosure notice filed on it in July 2010. It is owned by Wayne and Tonia McCollough.
Chase said Rumford and Mexico firefighters got the alarm at 5:33 a.m. Saturday. They arrived to find heavy fire at the rear of the building. Firefighters had it under control in about 45 minutes.
