CAPE COD, Mass. — Paul Peterson, 89, of Marstons Mills, Mass., passed away peacefully on March 19, at Cape Cod Hospital. Paul was the beloved husband of the late Lucie (Gemst) Peterson and the son of the late Johns and Martha Petersons. Until Lucie’s passing in 2007, Paul and Lucie had been married for 63 years.

Paul was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Sipeles, Latvia. Paul and Lucie escaped Russian Soviet domination of Eastern Europe in 1944, and immigrated to the United States in 1949. They settled in Bellingham, Mass., raised five children and became active in many community affairs. In 1973, Paul and Lucie moved to Eastham, Mass., and owned and operated Aspinet Court Motel and Cottage Colony for eight years.

Paul was a tool and die maker for most of his life, retiring from the profession at the age of 78. Paul took up and enjoyed the game of golf, dabbled in gardening and was an avid fan of Boston sports teams — particularly the Red Sox and New England Patriots. After putting away his golf clubs, Paul became an ardent reader, especially appreciating the works of Swedish author Henning Mankell. Paul was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed.

Paul is survived by four children, Eriks Petersons and his wife, Nancy, of Mechanic Falls, Paul Peterson Jr. and wife, Megan, of Blackstone, Mass., Kristina Moniz of Auburn and Robert Peterson of Marstons Mills; five grandchildren; three stepgranddaughters; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, John Peterson.

The family offers special thanks to the nurses and staff of Cape Cod Hospital, Urology Associates of Cape Cod and the VNA Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod.
