FARMINGTON — A block of wood carved down to a vehicle weighing less than five ounces and meant to speed down a new aluminum track was the basis for the Pinewood Derby held March 10 by Cub Scout Pack 585 of Farmington at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Awards were given for the fastest cars and the best of show, with winners moving on to compete in a district derby to be held April 14 in Jay.
Pack winners include first place, Jacob Fortier, second, Nathaniel Rackliff and third, Xander Stone. Stone Delgado took Best of Show. These Cubs will compete in the district derby. Alternate winners were Noah Mulcahy and Nicholas Marquis.
Thirty-five Cubs participated, watching their own creations fly down the track in hopes of a win.
While kits are given to each Cub, the small piece of wood is not always a traditional car.
Last year, one was made to look like an ant and won the leader’s choice award, Pack Leader Doug Blauvelt said.
The piece of wood has sometimes become a boat, logging truck or remote control, with each adhering to rules for weight, height, length and clearance underneath the vehicle, he said.
The Cubs create, paint and decorate each one prior to the derby.
This year, the pack raised money to buy the new, aluminum $1,700 track and timer by selling and racing sponsor vehicles.
There were quite a few sponsors, Blauvelt said. Those included Brady’s Snowmobile, Cousineaus, Daily Bulldog, Family Optometry, Farmington Ford, Franklin Chrysler, Hammond Lumber, Hight Chevrolet, Lions AV, Shiretown Insurance, Thai Smile Restaurant and Timberland Builders.
The fastest sponsor car award went to Farmington Ford.
Their old track will be donated to a group which doesn’t have one, Blauvelt said.
Now the pack is getting creative again as they prepare for next month’s cake auction with a Wild West theme, he said.
