PERU — George E. Allen Jr., 82, of Peru, formerly of Lewiston, passed away peacefully at home on March 21.

George was born in Mexico, Sept. 29, 1929, to George and Bertha (St. Onge) Allen. One of eight children, he grew up in Mexico and graduated from Mexico High School, where he earned his letter on the football team.

On Feb. 23, 1952, he married the love of his life, Aliette (Lee) Roberge of Lewiston. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

George worked for many years in area shoe shops in Lewiston, Lisbon Falls and Freeport. Then the shoe industry failed. George returned to school to obtain a degree in accounting from the Auburn Maine School of Commerce, where he graduated in 1972. He later worked for the city of Lewiston, Northeast Bank, finally retiring from the Brunswick Naval Air Station.

George was a lifelong, avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and being outdoors. In later years, he took great enjoyment playing horseshoes and taking his grandchildren skating and ice fishing on Worthley Pond.

George was active in many organizations starting with the Montagnard Club, Toastmasters and Eagles Club in Lewiston. In the Rumford area, he enjoyed the Sportmans Club, served on the Worthley Pond Lake Association and was a longtime volunteer for Senior Plus.

He is survived by his four brothers, Robert and wife, Pauline, Norman, James and his wife, Laurel and Richard; three sisters, Annie Arsenault, Dianne Dutton and Joan Jameson; he is fondly remembered by his seven children, Stephen and wife, Tracy, Marc and wife, Donna, Thomas and wife, Naomi, Katherine, Cindy, Becky Baril and husband, Ron and Beth Asselin and husband, Phil; 11 grandchildren, Paul, Jason, Matthew, Travis, Zandi, Adam, Audrey, Rachel, Jillian, Alyssa and Hannah; and two great-grandchildren, Aurora and Madeline.

His family is especially thankful for the compassionate care that he received from Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, especially Nikki, Mary and Bonnie.

The family would also like to give a special thanks to Dave and Donna Davis, Bill and Sharon Gates and Janet Hooley.

He will be fondly remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and dry wit and will be sadly missed by all.
