FARMINGTON — The first batch of unsorted plastics Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 were bailed Tuesday at the Sandy River Recycling Association’s facility off the Farmington Falls Road and are ready for shipment to northern mills for recycling.

Collected over the past three months from the association’s 21 member towns in the Greater Franklin County area, the wide-mouth yogurt containers and narrow-necked ketchup and dish detergent containers and other previously uncollected containers, represent the latest efforts to expand the nonprofit’s services to its member towns.

“We’re really pleased,” Ron Slater, SRRA’s manager, said. “More and more people and towns are getting on board every week.”

The three bales, each measuring 36 cubic feet after compaction, weighed in at approximately 2.25 tons, Slater said. “That’s a lot of plastic,” he said.

The bales will be marketed through the Maine Resource Recovery Association to a company in Quebec, where it is expected they will bring $44 to $54 a ton. “While it’s not a lot of money for the effort, it is saving landfill space for things that are not being recycled,” Slater said.

Until this year, the association only collected No. 2 plastics.
