FARMINGTON — Franklin County Animal Shelter is using a grant received by the Community Spay-Neuter clinic in Freeport to provide low-cost spay/neuter options for the Franklin County area.

A health exam, a rabies shot and a spay/neuter is available for $60. Other shots are available for additional fees.

Interested pet owners should come to the Franklin County Animal Shelter to fill out the necessary forms and pay the $60 fee prior to March 28.

FCAS will transport the cats to Freeport and return to the shelter in the afternoon. Owners must pick up their cats that afternoon.

Behavior problems can be prevented or minimized by spaying or neutering your cat, according to shelter personnel.

Sexual behavior in both male and female cats is reduced following surgery. In most male cats neutering reduces roaming, urine spraying and fights with neighborhood cats. The plaintive howling of female cats in heat is eliminated as is the burden of unwanted kittens. Overall, cats that are sexually intact are at greater risk of being relinquished to a shelter, shelter personnel said.
