BYRON — Selectmen have set a special meeting of a new committee to study the possibility of withdrawing from RSU 10 for 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 27 at the Town Office.
Selectman Anne Simmons-Edmunds said the committee will look into a variety of questions and issues facing towns that want to withdraw from their local school districts.
“We will take a bunch of different angles,” she said Thursday.
Among the research to be conducted are questions to neighboring town Hanover, which is a member of RSU 10 but not a part of the three districts that merged into RSU 10. Some members of the new committee will also discuss district withdrawal with the representatives of the coastal town, Wiscasset, which is currently working to pull out of its regional school unit.
The committee also plans to talk with Jon Holmes, of Dixfield, who is circulating a petition for the possible withdrawal of his town from RSU 10.
She said people at Tuesday’s meeting will likely devise other questions and information to pursue.
Simmons-Edmunds said Tuesday’s meeting will be organizational. The committee is expected to meet weekly for a time, then less frequently as information is gathered.
Residents who will sit on the committee are Jennifer Bolduc, Roger Boucher, Suzanne Noyes, David Noyes, Allison Freeman, Bruce Simmons, Chris Edmunds and Simmons-Edmunds.
She said anyone else who wants to become a part of the committee may also join.
Residents voted down an article at the March 12 annual town meeting that had asked whether they wanted to withdraw from the region. Simmons-Edmunds said that although the board and most of the residents want to pull out because of high educational costs, the matter was voted down until more information is available.
Once that data is known, selectmen plan to hold a special town meeting before the end of the school year to vote withdrawing.
