CANTON — Two gates on the Whitney Brook dam were closed last weekend to bring the water level up in Lake Anasagunticook, engineer Malcolm Ray told selectmen Thursday night.

Ray said the level was lower than desired, now that the dam construction is finished, so he closed two gates.

Ray monitors the lake level now, but that responsibility will fall to the Canton Water District in the future, Selectman Jackie Conant said.

In other news from the meeting at the Town Office, Glen Holmes, director of the Western Maine Economic Development Council, spoke to selectmen about assistance with business growth that the council can provide to small towns. He said the council works in partnership with local governments.

The board reviewed three applications for town clerk and treasurer, but no decision was made to set up interviews.

Fire chief and Selectman Shane Gallant said he replaced the broken carbon monoxide detector in the fire station for $25 more than what it would have cost to fix the broken one.
