OXFORD — The Oxford Budget Committee will hold its first meeting Tuesday to discuss the $3.21 million budget presented by Town Manager Michael Chammings.

The budget would be a 0.93 percent increase over the 2012 budget. Chammings said he expected residents’ tax rate wouldn’t increase once casino revenue shares are factored in.

Chammings originally requested a 1.25 percent increase, but said an insurance bid for the town Friday was lower than projected, saving the town around $10,000. The largest increases are a $103,192 increase for the Police Department and a $2,000 increase to General Assistance over last year, up to $8,800.

The extra money for the Police Department will pay for a new officer. According to Chammings, the Oxford Police Department has needed an extra officer for years. He said Oxford has fewer officers than surrounding towns. Casino revenue will help the town pay for an extra officer without tax increases, Chammings said.

Under Chammings’ proposed budget, the town would pay less than in 2012 toward long-term debt and interest.

The Budget Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Oxford Town Office.
