DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Armory in Augusta used to host a pet expo in late April to early May. I attended all, aside from last year, as I couldn’t find the date. It used to be mentioned on Pet Haven Lane but, alas, not anymore. Any ideas when it will be? — L., Auburn

ANSWER: Sun Spots found a pet show but not in Augusta. According to a Facebook page for the Southern Maine Pet Expo, the Androscoggin Pet Expo will be May 12-13 at the Lewiston Armory, 55 Alfred Plourde Parkway in Lewiston.

At maineevents.com, it says for more information to contact Linda Snyder, 740-2247 or LSnyder@regroupbiz.com.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I need a computer guru. How can a person tell if his computer printer is dirty or needs a new inkjet? I have an HP DeskJet 940C model and all it will print for color is reddish-pink; the black print is fine. Any suggestions? Thank you. —No Name via email

ANSWER: Sun Spots actually had an HP DeskJet 922C with a similar problem. For a while she was able to fiddle with it and get it to work, but these things are so cheaply made — and cheap to buy — they are usually not worth fixing.

You might try running any “clean” or “align” programs available. They can be accessed via your computer. Depending on what software you are running, the “printer and devices” menu should be accessible from your start menu.

If you have an extra ink cartridge on hand, you might want to try replacing it (or just the cyan and yellow cartridges if they are separate) to see if that will help, but you probably shouldn’t spend the money to buy new ones.

Unfortunately, printers are one more feature of our disposable society. You can buy a new one for less than $100. The ink is the biggest expense.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A follow-up program about Poland’s one-room schools is being planned by Friends of Ricker Library. This one, entitled Conversations with Scholars, hopes to draw in pupils who went to any of these schools prior to the opening of the present Poland Community School in 1954.

The first program with Rose Aikman featured pictures and history of the buildings, and this one will feature the people and their memories of the school days spent there.

People who attended Poland Corner, White Oak Hill, Harris Hill, Empire or Poland Spring Schools and would like to be a part of the conversation with their stories and memories may contact Barbara Strout at 998-4388, Rose Aikman at 966-2789 or Louise Roberts at 998-4612.

The program will be held on Sunday, May 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Ricker Library in Poland. Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served. — Barbara Strout, Poland
