SUMNER — RSU 10 directors Monday reduced the proposed 2012-13 operating budget $90,000 by reshuffling administration at Rumford and Mexico schools and eliminating one position.
They also decided to study possible long- and short-term facility changes.
Beginning in the fall, Mountain Valley High School Assistant Principal Christopher Decker will become principal of Rumford Elementary School. He will replace Anne Chamberlin, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.
Buckfield representative Maida Demers-Dobson agreed to appoint Decker to the elementary school position, however, she said she doesn’t want such in-house appointments to set a precedent.
“Chris will do a fine job, but we must consider a more formal process for (hiring) principals,” she said.
Current Mountain Valley Middle School assistant principal and athletic director, Alan Cayer, will become assistant principal and athletic director at Mountain Valley High School in Rumford.
Currently, teacher Jim Aylward serves as athletic director and part-time English teacher. He will return to full-time teaching.
Cayer’s position at Mountain Valley Middle School in Mexico will not be filled. However, the full-time teacher within the region who is chosen to serve as athletic director will receive a stipend. Ryan will also be assisted by a head teacher, who will also receive a stipend.
Rumford board member Tracey Higley was concerned that the workload may be too heavy as a result of some of the restructuring.
Ryan said he’d do the best he could.
“Desperate times call for desperate measures,” Ryan said. “Al was full time.”
The juggling of positions was done to reduce the proposed budget of $37 million. The current budget is $34.2 million.
Superintendent Tom Ward said the 2012-13 budget will be higher than this year but not $37 million.
During the April 9 school board meeting, major cuts are expected to be introduced to the board for action. They are not being disclosed at this time.
Rather than appoint a special committee to study short- and long-term possible facility changes, the board agreed to reconvene the Future Search Committee. Educational consultant Judy Enright of Skowhegan, who led the first round of Future Search Committee meetings, will be asked to do it again for the facilities study.
The committee is made up of administrators, teachers, students, businesspeople and other community members.
Assistant Superintendent Gloria Jenkins said the committee will likely be called within the next few weeks to begin work. She said its list of recommendations will be presented to the school board, which will decide the next steps.
