FARMINGTON — A baseball team for those 25 years and older is forming in Farmington to compete this summer in the Pine Tree Men’s Baseball League.
There are no tryouts for the team, but a throw-around practice will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 8, at Hippach Field, coach Chad Crandall said Wednesday. He’s looking for up to 15 members for the team.
Crandall plays in two local softball leagues but likes to play baseball. He also likes to play at Hippach Field. He played in high school and wanted to see what more he could do.
Encouraged by the league commissioner, Kris Targett of Winslow, Crandall started the team, which joins 11 teams in the league from other towns across central and western Maine.
Although the league has existed for several years, it’s the first time Farmington has had a team. Teams from Jay, Dixfield, Rumford, Bethel, Auburn, Winslow and other towns compete in the league, he said.
“The league was created to provide . . . an alternative to softball and enable us to play the game we all grew up playing,” according to the league website rules.
Each team is allowed to have up to three members who are at least 18 but under the age of 25, he said.
Games begin in May and will be played starting at 9 a.m. on most Sunday mornings through August. There will be some travel games, but Targett tries to schedule games with nearby towns so there isn’t a lot of travel, he said.
He expects some preseason practices, then practice once a week.
Crandall is excited to get started and invites any players from around Franklin County who want to participate to come to the April 8 session at 11 a.m. at Hippach Field on Main Street in Farmington or to call him for more information at 491-4336.
