AUBURN — A former commander of the Sons of AmVets in New Gloucester and a former 911 dispatcher is expected to be sentenced Monday on a charge of felony theft.
Peter Ross Bragdon, 33, of Gray pleaded guilty earlier this month in Androscoggin County Superior Court to the felony stemming from the theft of more than $8,900 from the veterans organization’s bank account, authorities said.
Bragdon once served as commander of the post at 858 Lewiston Road but had his membership revoked, authorities said. Even after the revocation, Bragdon’s name remained on a bank account connected to the organization. After leaving the group, he continued to make withdrawals, according to authorities. An investigation into the missing money resulted in Bragdon’s arrest.
A grand jury indictment handed up in September charged that Bragdon engaged in the illegal activity from August 2008 until April 2011.
He also pleaded guilty to misuse of entrusted property, a misdemeanor, during the same period.
Bragdon faces up to five years in prison on the felony charge and as many as 364 days in jail for the misdemeanor.
His court-appointed attorney, Verne Paradie, is expected to argue for a lesser sentence.
Bragdon worked for seven years as a 911 dispatcher for the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.
In a separate case, Bragdon had pleaded guilty to charges of theft, forgery and tax evasion in Kennebec County Superior Court. The case had been moved as a change of venue from Androscoggin County Superior Court. He is awaiting sentencing on those charges pending the outcome of Monday’s local sentencing.
Bragdon is a 1996 graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School. He attended Central Maine Community College, where he earned an associate degree in business administration and a certificate as an emergency medical technician intermediate. A Sun Journal engagement announcement listed his current residence as Mechanic Falls.
