LIVERMORE FALLS — In honor of the last fighting forces that left Vietnam on March 30, 1973, the Legislature passed a law in 2011 declaring March 30 Vietnam Remembrance Day.

George Bunten Post 10 American Legion will hold an open house today for veterans from the Vietnam War, the Vietnam War era and all veterans of the U.S. military.

The American Legion Hall at 17 Reynolds Ave. will open at 9 a.m. and offer coffee and doughnuts followed by a light lunch and homemade chili for all to enjoy until 7 p.m., said Donald Simoneau, Adjutant Post 10, and George Wyman, Sergeant-At-Arms, Post 10

All are welcome to visit and share time with fellow veterans and friends, they said. There will be no formal functions other than the sharing time. Cribbage boards and cards will be available and veterans can bring items in that they would like to share with their fellow Veterans.

Many remember the fall of Saigon, which was on April 29 and 30, 1975, more than two years after the last fighting troops left Vietnam.

There were no parades or welcomes for the returning veterans so a U.S. resolution declaring March 30 as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” was passed.
