RUMFORD — Mountain Valley High School Vice Principal Christopher Decker recognized several teachers at a recent schoolwide assembly.

“Mr. Gilbert asked me to present Portland Sea Dogs teacher appreciation certificates,” said Decker. “I am proud to recognize Melissa Forbes, Meg Doughty, Ken Baker, Lacey Todd and Chris Carver.”

Principal Matt Gilbert later explained, “Sea Dogs ask school administrators to recognize five outstanding teachers each year. All of the teachers will receive a complimentary ticket to the Sea Dogs game on April 27. They will be honored on the field and have their names scrolled on the Video Board. Teachers attending the game will get a complimentary massage.”

Gilbert said, “Each of the teachers did something unique for the school. Melissa Forbes works on the yearbook and coaches field hockey and girls’ lacrosse. Meg Doughty completed her master’s degree. In addition, Meg is the chair of the English department and heads the districtwide writing task force. Ken Baker co-chaired the accreditation process. He also participated in an intense summer institute to research DNA mutations in genes related to melanin production. Lacey Todd advises the student council and serves on district-wide task forces for RTI (Response to Intervention), PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports), literacy and 21st century skills. Chris Carver is the chair of the social studies department, senior class advisor, association president, and AP teacher.”

“I picked five teachers that are deserving of recognition for all they do across all aspects of the school community,” Gilbert concluded.

Student Council Co-Presidents Cody Smith and Cam Welch presented the Teacher of the Term Award. They read, “This person is a dedicated member of the science department. She stays after with students who need extra help, and will not leave until they understand whatever they’re stuck on. She has been flexible with her time, and was recently able to fill in (as teacher) for the physics classes. She has portrayed both students and faculty of Mountain Valley in a positive way in our local newspaper. This term’s teacher of the term is Ms. [Donna] Peare.”
