The Newfoundland band Shanneyganock, known for its ballads, shanties and jigs and reels, will give three concerts in Maine in mid-April.
LEWISTON — New England Celtic Arts will present Newfoundland traditional band Shanneyganock at the Franco-American Heritage Center on Tuesday, April 17.
The group will also perform at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on Wednesday April 18 and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, April 19. Curtain at the Franco Center and Skye is 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. in Unity. Preshow jam sessions at Skye and Unity are scheduled for one hour before show.
Loosely translated from Gaelic, the band’s name means “creature of the night.” Their music is heavily Irish/Celtic influenced.
Fifteen foggy years ago, Mark Hiscock and Chris Andrews were double booked at a small pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Rather than cancel one performer, the owner suggested they play together — and, thus, Shanneyganock was born.
Joined by longtime bassist Bob Pike and Billy Sutton on drums, Shanneyganock is known for its trademark ballads, shanties and jigs and reels.
The year 2007 brought Music Newfoundland and Labrador award wins, including Entertainers of the Year, as well as a 2008 East Coast Music Award nomination for Roots Group. Shanneyganock also won the prestigious Entertainers of the Year at the 2009 Music NL award for its Vol. Vll” album.
The band just released its eighth album, “Live on George Street,” with a DVD to be released around Christmas.
Concert tickets are $15. For reservations at the Franco Center and Skye Theatre, call 562-4445; for UCCPA, call 948-7469.
