BUCKFIELD — Selectmen were told Tuesday night that vandals struck the town over the weekend, tipping over stones at Damon Cemetery and breaking dishes at the waste station swap shop.

Acting Town Manager Dana Lee said stones were overturned and tire tracks ripped up the cemetery grounds on High Street. He said a window was broken at the Transfer Station swap shop on Route 140 and items tipped over and strewn around.

Cpl. Brian Landis of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday night that the swap shop burglary occurred over the weekend. Someone broke a window “and went into the building and ransacked the place. They totally ransacked it,” he said.

Besides the window, “nothing else was broken,” he said.

“We’ve had a rash of burglaries in the area and they appear to be connected,” he said. Recent incidents in Buckfield, Hartford and Sumner involved property from vehicles, homes and businesses being destroyed or stolen, he said.

In other business at Tuesday’s board meeting, selectmen authorized guardrails to be installed on the Hammond Hill Bridge and Shedd Hollow Road. The North Hill Road guardrail installation was tabled until the end of the fiscal year to see if there were funds for it.

The Fire Department didn’t find what it needed in a squad truck at the Maine Surplus Auction and decided to wait until the next auction to try and find a truck.

Buckfield and Sumner selectmen will hold a joint meeting on the Solid Waste Transfer Station at 6 p.m. April 17 at the Buckfield Municipal Building.

Lee announced that on Aug. 4, residents will have an opportunity to take hazardous waste such as pesticides, paints and other chemicals to the Norway waste station. Times will be posted on the Buckfield Web page. The collection will be free for residents until the budgeted $600 is spent.

Hartford residents will rent the Buckfield Transfer Station for their universal waste collection May 24 from 1 to 6 p.m. Universal waste includes such items as light bulbs, TVs and electronics.
