POLAND — Selectmen want to keep the town’s options open when it comes to possible future expansions to the project to bring water to the South Village area.

John Cleveland, the town’s economic development consultant, told selectmen Tuesday that he was working with the owners of Shaker Hill Nursery to see if it made sense for them to tie into the water line that has just been installed to serve the area surrounding the intersection of routes 26 and 122.

Cleveland noted that the nursery relies on wells to irrigate its plantings during summer months and this was putting a strain of their capacity. The demand runs at from 5,000 to 10,000 gallons a day. Cleveland said he was looking into the alternatives for providing seasonal and year-round service.

Selectmen suggested that he might add an alternative whereby, if he was burying a small line for year-round service, he could bury a second, larger pipe, capped off for the time being, that could eventually provide water to properties in subdivisions on top of the hill.

Meeting with Code Enforcement Officer Nicholas Adams to discuss reviewing fee schedules, selectmen went another step and asked Adams to prepare recommendations for changes in fees charged to builders and pushed for a review of all fees charged by all town departments.

Administrative Assistant Rosemary Roy noted that it had been more than two years since a comprehensive review had been conducted. Selectmen agreed to, at another meeting, set a date for a workshop on fee schedules, prior to developing recommendations that would be taken to a public hearing.

* Selectmen nominated the Poland Spring Preservation Society for a 2012 Spirit of America Foundation tribute for outstanding community service.

* The board approved entering into a contract to sign up to purchase a series of aerial photographs, as they become available in the next three years, for $6,600, spread over three years. The photographs will greatly enhance the accuracy of town mapping.

* Selectmen took no action to move their May 1 regularly scheduled meeting to avoid conflict with Regional School Unit 16’s recently announced district town meeting, that sets, by a vote of those present, a school budget that then goes to a referendum vote, scheduled for May 15. Selectman Steve Robinson was disappointed that RSU 16 officials had chosen the conflicting date.

* In her report to selectmen, Town Manager Rosemary Kulow noted that five of Poland’s Troop 125 Boy Scouts had spent a day last weekend cleaning along the sides of Plains Road. She noted that they filled 112 trash bags, picked up five tires and collected five bags of recyclable containers. Selectmen gave the Scouts and their leaders a “huge thank-you” and directed that letters of appreciation be sent to the individual Scouts who participated.
