DEAR SUN SPOTS: My letter about large-print books did not include my phone number. It is 783-2369. Thank you. — No Name, No Town

ANSWER: When someone signs No Name, Sun Spots always hesitates to include phone numbers unless its clear they want her to do so.

Sun Spots suggests that even if readers ask for their names to be withheld that they include the town. It can be very helpful to those who want to respond to requests or offers to know the location.

However, neither lack of phone number nor town proved a hindrance in this case. Many readers responded to your request. Too many, in fact, for one column. Sun Spots will run the rest of the letters later this week.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am responding to the March 28 letter regarding large-print books. I have a lot of them that I would love to give to this reader.

I am in the process of moving, and this is a perfect opportunity to give to someone who I know will enjoy them, and they will be going to a good home.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is in response to the lady looking for large-print books. I have several that I have read and would be willing to give to her. She can contact me at 966-3064 or 890-2062. — suzyt14@megalink.net

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the elderly person looking for large-print books (I read them, too), the local libraries (Lewiston and Auburn) carry them. If she is not a member, a library card is available for free.

I’m a frequent borrower, so if transportation is a problem and you’re local, then perhaps I could work something out to get you there. I know times are tough, so if I can help just let me know. — Carlene, 212-1585, cgoudreau@wmxinc.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots received several letters reminding her about library services. Sun Spots often recommends the excellent services of local libraries, but she thought, perhaps wrongly, that transportation to the library might be an issue with someone whose vision is declining.

Sun Spots’ own mother, an avid reader, has greatly reduced her usage of the library because of her reluctance to drive and instead has taken to ordering books through the mail. She uses Edward R. Hamilton Bookseller Co., P.O. Box, 15, Falls Village, CT 06031-0015. No Internet is required, although it is available (edwardrhamilton.com). His books are reasonably priced and available via catalog, although more recent titles may not be available, his selection of classics is large.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You have had several readers ask where to get large-print books. The answer is their local library.

Both Lewiston and Auburn public libraries carry large-print books and try to keep their collections current.

Also, for those readers looking to find a good home for their old books, the libraries will take used books and resell them on their used book carts for a very small price. The funds from the sale of the used books helps defray some of the book budget cuts of the past few years.— Judy Gervais, gervaiscpa@gmail.com
