LIVERMORE FALLS — Residents here and in Livermore voted 221-96 on Tuesday to close the Spruce Mountain High School South Campus in Livermore Falls by June 30, 2013.

The vote in Livermore Falls was 111-51. In Livermore the vote was 110-45.

It was a low turnout since the two towns combined have more than 3,000 registered voters.

Taxpayers in both towns faced sharing the burden of paying $650,758.79 to keep the school open if the vote failed.

Regional School Unit 73 directors will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, to certify the votes at the Cedar Street Board Room in Livermore Falls. They also will consider action on setting a public hearing Tuesday, April 24, on issuing bonds or notes for a proposed $5.3 million addition/renovation project at the Spruce Mountain High School North Campus in Jay.

The board will also consider approving a referendum vote on the bonds or notes for the construction project Tuesday, May 8, in Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls. If the construction project is rejected, the board would need to come up with a new option. They have reserved the right to reopen the Livermore Falls high school.

The plan for the 2012-13 school year is to operate the two high schools. All of the ninth-graders would attend the campus in Jay along with grades 10, 11 and 12 from the Jay area. The campus in Livermore Falls would serve grades 10, 11 and 12 from Livermore and Livermore Falls.
