Article 13 on Poland’s 2012 town meeting warrant seeks the town’s purchase of property located between Ricker Library and the Poland Police Department and Poland Recreation Department buildings.

The article was initiated by citizen petition, as prescribed by the town charter.

The property in question is the only piece of land not currently owned by the town of Poland’s town office, town hall, etc. complex.

The town meeting in 2003 authorized purchase of that property. The transaction fell through and the purchase money was reapplied to town accounts at the 2004 town meeting.

If Poland townspeople do not act at this town meeting to acquire the property, it may be many years, if ever, that the opportunity for the town to obtain this valuable piece of property occurs again.

If purchased, greatly needed expanded parking for the town office, town hall, recreation and police departments, the Historical Society and library could be an immediate use with minimal cost. Additional uses could be determined by the Board of Selectmen or a committee appointed by them at some future time.
