JAY/LIVERMORE FALLS — Principals of Spruce Mountain High School North and South campuses have selected seniors to received the 2012 Principal’s Award.

North Campus Principal Gilbert Eaton selected Samantha Nicole Hutchinson of Jay, and South Campus Principal Steve Leunig selected Kathryn Ventrella of Fayette as the award recipients.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

The principals and Hutchinson and Ventrella will attend an Honors Luncheon along with other award winners and their principals at the Spectacular Event Center at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in Bangor.

“Samantha is an outstanding student and school citizen,” Eaton said. She is a member of the Soccer and Track teams, the Math Team, the Leo Club, the Science Explorer Club, the state championship Envirothon Team and the National Honor Society, serving as its current president. She is also the valedictorian of her class.

“Samantha has a great work ethic and a genuine love of learning. She is an exemplary ambassador for her fellow students, the faculty at Spruce Mountain High School, her family, and her community,” Eaton said.

“Kathryn’s school achievements are impressive in terms of both quantity and quality, and she has distinguished herself in every evaluative category,” Leunig said. “Academically, she has consistently performed at a high level throughout high school, with the result that she was recently named valedictorian of the Class of 2012.”

She is also an accomplished and honored multi-sport athlete, being a four-year starter in field hockey, basketball and softball, and she recently was named a Mountain Valley Conference Academic All-Star in varsity basketball.

She has been involved in extra-curricular activities at school, including peer tutoring, and she is president of the senior class and vice president of the school’s National Honor Society chapter. Ventrella also volunteers her time for a variety of Community Service activities, including Youth Ministry, Area Youth Sports and the Tri-Town Ministerial Food Bank.
