OXFORD — Developers are planning for big crowds when the Oxford Casino opens in June. So large, the casino is erecting a 4,000-square-foot tent outside to serve drinks and entertain guests while they wait to go inside to play games.

On Thursday, Oxford selectmen voted unanimously to extend the liquor license granted two weeks ago to allow the casino to serve alcohol in the “waiting tent” until Labor Day.

Scott Smith, spokesman for the casino, said the tent would be used to sign people up for the Players Club, a program casinos use to reward frequent customers.

Smith said the casino is anticipating that the novelty of the new casino will draw big crowds this summer, and there may be days when there are more customers than the casino’s capacity allows. The tent would let customers drink and sign up while waiting for slot machines and table games to open up.

Smith said there may be entertainment in the tent, as well.

The casino is set to open in June. It will be open 24 hours a day, although state liquor laws require them to stop alcohol sales at 1 a.m. Alcohol sales can resume at 6 a.m. — 10 a.m. Sundays.
