OXFORD — Selectmen approved a draft warrant Thursday for the Oxford town meeting, set for June 9.

In addition to the budget, Oxford residents will be asked to approve an amendment allowing residents to prepay part of the following year’s taxes. Town Manager Michael Chammings said some residents who overpay their taxes have asked to apply the balance to the following year, but the town is not yet allowed to do so.

Chammings, who is also the town’s tax collector, said some people and business owners, after having a good year, want to pay beyond the current year’s taxes to pay against the following year.

“I don’t have the authority to take it,” Chammings said. The warrant article would change that. The town would pay no interest on those prepayments.

Another article would ask the town to appropriate $35,625 from surplus for the Pismo Beach Ball Field Account to pay for improvements there, including a second baseball diamond.

The town meeting is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Oxford Elementary School. The secret ballot election would be held the following Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Oxford Public Safety Building.

Special town meetings

Chammings told the board that the town will probably have several special town meetings per year for the next few years as more businesses move to the Route 26 corridor. Chammings said he’s seen interest from hotels and restaurants considering moving to the area.

He said it would become “virtually impossible” to have one town meeting per year as the town asks residents to approve large projects. He noted that special town meetings are generally better attended than regular town meetings each June.
