Congratulations to the editors of the Sun Journal for a not overly critical review from The Maine Heritage Policy Center.

In Auburn on March 28, CEO Lance Dutson, in an illustrated presentation, gave convincing evidence of a strong liberal bias in Maine’s major dailies. However, he had minimal evidence of a liberal slant at the Sun Journal when compared to the Bangor Daily News and the Portland Press Herald.

Mostly he faults the local paper for not reporting on issues favorable to conservative viewpoints and for neglecting to delve into controversies harmful to liberals. His major criticism seemed to be the paper’s tweets from one editor, whom Dutson faulted for lacking journalistic objectivity.

Dutson had some praise for the work of the Sun Journal’s State House reporter, whom he singled out as the most diligent reporter covering the capitol.

As a reader hungry for impartial reporting, I am disturbed by the liberal bias in national papers such as The New York Times and the Washington Post, but have found the Sun Journal reasonably balanced on most occasions. The editorials in particular are usually fair and the positions well reasoned.

Since I am not a Twitterer, I am not familiar with that specific editor’s tweets, and Dutson did not provide any examples for his claim of lack of objectivity.
