AUBURN — Councilors might be ready to narrow the list of potential city managers to two or three. They met in executive session Monday and Tuesday night with six candidates.

Mayor Jonathan LaBonte said Wednesday that the interviews went well and councilors might meet in executive session Thursday night to select their favorites for the job. Those favorites are scheduled to return to Auburn on April 24 and 26 for a second round of interviews.

LaBonte said councilors might be willing to make the names of the finalists public before those second-round interviews.

“One of the things the council committed to was, when we are down to our top choices, the last component of this job search would be public,” LaBonte said. “That’s still true, but I’m not sure we’re down to that final component just yet. That’s one of the things we want to wrestle with.”

The previous City Council voted to terminate City Manager Glenn Aho’s contract in October. They voted in November to hire consultants Eaton Peabody to lead the search for Aho’s replacement and to manage the city in the meantime. Don Gerrish, an Eaton Peabody consultant, is serving as the city’s interim manager.

The City Council is on track to select a final candidate and begin negotiations in May.
