AUBURN — “Nightwords: A Liturgy on the Holocaust” will be presented by Temple Shalom Synagogue in observance of Holocaust Memorial Day. The readers theater-type presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in the main sanctuary of the synagogue, 74 Bradman St. A $5 donation is requested.
This program is loosely based on Jewish liturgy, but is accessible to all. It lasts approximately 90 minutes and is not appropriate for children under 12 years of age.
According to Rabbi Hillel Katzir, spiritual leader of Temple Shalom, “The events of the Holocaust must never be forgotten. We are continually seeking new ways to understand the experiences of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The ‘Nightwords’ reading is a powerful and moving text that will help us to remember.”
The cast includes members of Temple Shalom and readers from the wider Lewiston-Auburn community. “The Holocaust is not just a Jewish issue,” said Katzir, “it is a human issue that requires remembrance by all, so that, hopefully, such terrible events will not happen again.”
The performance will be followed by refreshments, and, for those interested, a conversation about the Holocaust and the “Nightwords” performance, moderated by Katzir.
