Holocaust survivor visit
LEWISTON — Holocaust survivor Dr. Julius Ciembroniewicz will be the guest speaker at an April 20 “brown bag lunch” that Lewiston Mayor Robert E. Macdonald will host during National Days of Remembrance Week, which runs April 15-22. The event is scheduled for noon at the Lewiston Public Library, Callahan Hall, 200 Lisbon St. It is free and open to the public.
Ciembroniewicz was a young teenager when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. Forced into a life on the run, his family was separated, and he spent the war hiding in a monastery outside of Krakow. Upon liberation, he was reunited with only two of his family members and restarted his education. After becoming a physician and neurosurgeon, he defected to England and eventually came to the United States. Today, he continues to be active as a neurosurgeon in Augusta and Lewiston.
Also on April 20, local Rabbi Hillel Katzir of Temple Shalom will give an event blessing, and a brief remembrance video clip from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., “Choosing to Act: Stories of Rescue,” will be shown.
A time of questions and answers will enable attendees to interact with the guest speaker.
