CANTON — Two members of Grammy’s Choice Quilting Group presented the town with a queen-size quilt Thursday night at the selectmen’s meeting.

Phyliss Jamison and Sally Bryant said the quilt was a thank-you from the group for the use of the Municipal Building for their meetings the first and third Wednesday of each month. They thought a raffle of the quilt could raise some money for the town.

Money was the big issue Thursday night as the board received news from the audit that more funds are needed in the coffers.

A representative from RHR Smith advised that the town should have money for 30 days of town operations in the undesignated fund balance.

Taxes are due on May 10 and some payments are beginning to come in.

Harry Childs of Greene was appointed assistant administrator. He will also take over as treasurer. Kelly Cavanaugh will stay on as deputy treasurer.

Selectman Donald Hutchins praised Cavanaugh for the great job she has done stepping in after Assistant Administrator Kathy Hutchins resigned due to illness.

Diane Ray presented a proposal by Girl Scout Troop 349 for a community garden. She said the site next to Canton Tire is ideal. The scouts have the seeds and are excited about making it a five-year project.

No decision was made by the board.

Selectmen voted to have road foreman Don Cummings buy a mower and have the road department doing mowing, including cemeteries. Hutchins is looking for a part-time person for the road crew who can take care of extra work around town.

It was also voted to have timber cut from a 189-acre town plot. Hutchins said this was a great way to bring in revenue. He moved to have the town timber property managed and it was a vote.
