LEWISTON — Gemma L. Bernier, 91, of Sabattus, died Friday, April 13, at Marshwood Nursing Home.
She was born in Lewiston on Nov. 20, 1920, the daughter of Wilfred and Laura (Bazinet) Laroche. She graduated from St. Dominic’s High School in 1938.
She was the widow of Yvon W. Bernier, whom she married on June 4, 1940, and who died on July 11, 1996.
Gemma and her husband were co-founders of Hy-Style catering and later owned and operated Yvon’s Market in Sabattus, where Gemma was nicknamed “Smokie.”
Gemma was a member of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. She enjoyed painting and music, and especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Richard R. Bernier of Rockwood; her daughter, Monique Therriault of Sabattus; her grandchildren, Richard, Sue, Tina, Michael, Don and Paul; 11 great-grandchildren; and by her brother, Laurence Laroche of Florida.
She was predeceased by her brother, Gerard Laroche.
