RUMFORD — The Mountain Valley Rec Basketball League in conjunction with The Mountain Valley Athletic Boosters hosted the 13th annual MV Rec Invitational Basketball Tournament on March 30, 31 and April 1.
Class Acts Property Management of Portland and coach/owner Bill Simpson were the class of the A division. Class Acts, who have a touring team that play in tournaments all over Northern New England and boast some of the best former college players from around the state, have won this tournament four out of the past six years.
Liberty Mutual made up of many former Rumford players (Shawn Spadea, Scot New, Isaac Stickney, Kevin Gallant and Craig Milledge) had upset the champions on several occasions in past years but were beaten in the semifinals by Skowhegan, a club put together by Derek Holt and Josh Berard.
Class Acts bested Skowhegan in the finals, 52-35, after a tiring five-game weekend for both. Matt Clement of Class Acts was awarded tourament MVP, an award he has won this award multiple times.
Other All -ournament awards for A division went to Andrew Duncanson and Brian Wohl of Class Acts, Derek Holt of Skowhegan, Brad Hasse of Laid Back Installers (Mexico) and Jon Wallingford of Liberty Mutual. The other teams in the A division were Agren Appliance and Ship City of Bath/Brunswick.
The B division was won by KC Auto of Lewiston/Auburn and coach/owner/player, Kevin Blazer. They beat Injured Reserve of Bath and coach/player Brian Wagg, 62-57, in a well-played final.
The Bath contingent has participated in the tournament for many years, while this is the first year in the B Division for KC Auto after playing last year in the A division. 43-year-old Chris Williamson of KC Auto was the B divison MVP. All tourney awards went to Nick Weekes of KC Auto, Cam Angell of Shooters(Auburn) and Brian Wagg and Adam Leclair of Injured Reserve. Other teams were Bethel Ballers, Franklin County Boys of Strong/Phillips, Urban Achievers of Kennebunk and Emma B. Foundation of Dixfield.
The tournament also staged several shooting contests, two used as tie breakers for the 3-game round robin and single-elimination event. The foul shooting contest finals featured Owen Jones of LBI and Kevin Gallant of Liberty Mutual and was won by Owen Jones. In the prelims, both Gallant and Sean Caddigan of Agren Appliance hit 25 of 25 shots.
The 3-point contest finals featured Kevin Hasse of LBI and Joe Gaudreau of Bethel Ballers, with Gaudreau prevailing. The skills shooting contest sponsored by Agren Appliance, featuring multiple trick shots with a 40-second time limit was won by Brian Wagg, who not only won a 32-inch flatscreen TV but hit a halfcourt shot that won the 50/50 contest as well.
When all the funds are tallied, this year’s tournament should produce a record $7,000 for the MV Athletic Boosters.
