DEAR SUN SPOTS: I read your column every day, and I am always amazed at what people are seeking and that almost every request is answered.

So here is my request: I am losing my eyesight and would like to have a light that has a magnifying glass attached. This would need to be handheld.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. — No Name, No Town

ANSWER: Sun Spots found a few online; it looks as though your best bet there is www.firststreetonline.com (1-800-704-1209), which advertises as having “innovative products for seniors and their caregivers.” They have a catalog, so you can get one and see what you’ll be getting first rather than ordering online or buy phone.

Readers may know of a local source as well. Or perhaps someone has a used one they’d like to sell.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The lady who wanted large-print books (March 28) should call the Maine State Library. They have a program for the vision-impaired where they will send you (postage free) large-print books.

You order from an extensive catalog. Call 1-800-762-7106 to get started. They will send you an application, which you get signed by your local librarian or eye doctor.

Read at your own pace. When you send the books back, they will send you more. — Helene Decker, South Paris

ANSWER: Thank you, Helene, for providing this useful information, including details such as the phone number.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I also save used stamps for Sister Gilberte Boisvert (April 3). She wrote me that she broke her hip and is now in a nursing home in Methuen, Mass.

On Wednesday and Saturday she is taken by ambulance to the hospital for dialysis. Most of her time is spent in her room. She is still able to walk by herself with a walker or cane. — Denise, Lewiston

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A few weeks ago someone wrote in asking if Sr. Boisvert was still accepting stamps. I cut and mailed that inquiry to Sr. Boisvert, at the same address you mentioned in the column (Methuen, Mass., address).

Sr. Boisvert has been ill but she has asked me to contact you and let you know that she is indeed still collecting stamps. Working with the stamps is one way to keep her mind off her illness. Please thank all who will be sending stamps to her, and please keep her in your prayers. Thank you. — No Name via email

ANSWER: In case any readers need Sister’s address, here it is: 209 Lawrence St., Methuen, MA 01844.

She request that when cutting the stamp out, please leave a little space around it so that the stamp is not damaged. Foreign stamps are the most valuable. Nonprofit stamps are of no use. There is no such thing as too few. As many as one stamp is welcome. If a self-addressed stamped envelope or a 45-cent stamp is sent, she will send a thank-you note.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a cookbook compiled by members of the Women’s Association of Federated Church, Lewiston, dated 1940. It’s free to anyone who would like it.

I also have some wood clothespins with metal clips that snap onto the clothesline. These are also free. — No Name, 782-5503
