LEWISTON — Applicants are being sought for the newly established Lewiston-Auburn Bike-Ped Committee.

The purpose of the committee is to promote bicycle-pedestrian education and develop and monitor policy for nonmotorized transportation and recreation in Lewiston-Auburn, according to a statement from the City of Lewiston.

“I encourage anyone who travels regularly on our streets and pathways by foot, bike, or wheelchair to apply for the committee, ” Lewiston City Councilor Craig Saddlemire said.

“We also would like to have applicants who own local businesses or have a transportation planning background. It’s important that this committee represent community members who use different modes of travel around L-A,” he said.

The committee will consist of seven voting members, one Auburn councilor and two Auburn residents appointed by Mayor Jonathan LaBonte and one Lewiston councilor and two Lewiston residents appointed by Mayor Robert E. Macdonald.

The committee will also have a local business representative jointly selected by the two mayors. Criteria that will be considered for appointment to the committee are: commutes in L-A by bike; commutes in L-A by foot; commutes by wheelchair; has a planning background in transportation; and walks and/or bikes for recreation in L-A.

The city councils of both cities voted to create the committee, and interested individuals may apply at their respective City Clerk’s Office, either 27 Pine St., Lewiston, or 60 Court St., Auburn.

Online committee applications also can be found at www.lewistonmaine.gov and www.auburnmaine.org.
